Dennis, Reach Truck Driver, deep freeze section
“If you feel like a change in your work at some point, that is always possible.”
"I have been working for Sligro for 12.5 years now. The first 5 years as an Order Picker and then as a Reach Truck Driver in the deep-frozen goods receiving section. I also helped out for 1.5 years at a cash-and-carry wholesale outlet because they were short of staff there. That involved working in a Sligro store. And now I have been working here in Breda for 2 years. In the deep freeze section, you work in special clothing because the temperature is controlled at -22 to -25 degrees. So I look pretty much like an Eskimo, but that doesn't hinder me in my work.
When the Driver arrives at our dock, I unload the deep-frozen products. I log everything in with the wrist scanner, print stickers for the pallets and drive the pallets away. Obviously you also check that everything is as it should be. The pallets then go to the holding area and from there to the deep freeze warehouse. This has to be done within a maximum of 45 to 60 minutes because the items start to thaw. I still really like working here; you have job security and can plan for the future. And if you feel like a change in your work at some point, that is always possible within Sligro."
Stacey, Order Picker
“Order picking is like playing Tetris, at life-size scale”
"As a child, I used to come to Sligro with my father. Now I have been working there for almost four years as an Order Picker. After I applied, I soon heard that I could start work. I received extensive training during my induction. That involved an explanation of the order picking process from start to finish: what products are where, how to use the scanner, how best to stack the order on your pallet, things like that. If you don't do that properly, the whole stack will start to slide. The processes here are all automated, the truck you use to collect together orders is linked to the logistics system. I have since become a key-user for that computer system. That means that colleagues can ask me for help if something is not working properly.
Because I have been working at Sligro as an Order Picker for a while now, I am occasionally asked to supervise flex workers. I really enjoy doing that. Not all flex workers can speak Dutch, so that's an opportunity for me to use my English. I would like to continue to grow within Sligro, so I and my Team Leader will soon be reviewing what opportunities are open to me."
Jan, Goods Receiving Operator
“I leave home with a smile on my face every day and am still smiling when I come back from work.”
"Before joining Sligro, I worked in a supermarket for 38 years. I started there as a shelf filler and ended up as the store manager. Then I worked at another logistics company for several years. When the work there dried up, I met someone from Sligro at a job fair. There was an immediate click and I soon found myself working in goods receiving at the delivery service location in Breda. My job there is to allocate the goods that come in to the right locations, so that the Order Pickers can always find the products they need.
Most of the process is automated: I scan the barcodes on the product with a wrist scanner, then you see exactly where you need to go and the quantities you should have on the pallet. You check that, obviously, and also check the use-by date if applicable. The work is very varied: you work with different products that have to go to different places. Sometimes when it's busy, I help my colleagues in order picking. You work as a team to make sure all the work has been done by the end of the day."
